Extreme SIP Walls

Structural Insulated Panels, SIPs Homes, Midwest SIPs ConstructionUnlike a 2x4 framed wall, Extreme SIP walls are square and straight every time. As any builder can attest, non-straight dimensional lumber can negatively impact any stage of the building process, including cost and building time. Extreme SIP walls replace stud and batt insulation construction, creating a structural, extremely energy-efficient building envelope. SIP walls have a continuous wood surface that is crucial for a solid nail-base for both exterior and interior finishes. Interior finishes such as cabinetry, moldings, flooring, and more can be installed much easier on SIP walls than stud walls due to the continuous attachment surface. This allows for greater design flexibility forSIPs, Structural Insulated Panel Construction, Midwest Green Building cabinet makers and finish carpenters since they are no longer constrained to expansions ending with studs.

Basic Installation Procedure

SIPs, Midwest Energy Efficient Construction, SIP Building

  - Always begin at a corner
  - Place the first panel over the bottom plate and flush to the exterior edge of the building
  - While holding panel approximately plumb, in and out on the face, plumb the outside panel exactly vertical and nail off both sides (it will stand up easily by itself at this time)
  - After placing the proper sealant on the seams, situate the panel on the other side of the corner over its bottom plate, tight against the first panel, and nail off (at this time, the two panels are not attached to each other)
  - Align and attach the panels at the corner
  - One panel will run long and the other panel will butt up against the previous one
  - The panels are then attached with "Big SIPs Screws" through the longer panel (just inside the dimensional lumber placed in the corner) and into the dimensional lumber in the second panel
  - The big SIPs screws are placed approximately 3" from the top and bottom of the wall and then at a maximum of 2 ft on center, or per the engineered detail drawings for that particular job

"I have access to a thermal imaging camera. On a cold winter night, I used it to view a neighbor's stick-framed house. I could clearly see the studs behind the siding, and the block foundation was glowing bright, indicating a high heat loss. The only area that showed heat loss on my house, which utilizes foundation panels, wall panels and some roof panels, was the windows and vent stack."....view more testimonials
